The Sheep Creek Weavers Basket Makers started two years ago when Merlyn Trigg donated to us 150 pounds of basketry reed. The idea was to learn different basket-making techniques with this reed, and then go on to use the foraged, natural materials that grow around us.
As a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Sheep Creek Weavers in 2026, the group, comprised of 16 members, presents a community basket that involved 16 weavers weaving simultaneously over two different days.
“The Gathering” is a 56 x 71 x 83 cm basket woven with locally foraged sandbar willow, English brown willow, and #6 reed, using twining, 3-rod waling, and reverse twining, with a 3-rod border. It sports a river root handle.
The Sheep Creek Weavers Basket Makers would like to thank Merlyn for the gift of reed, self-knowledge, and discovery.
