Block printing is one of the oldest types of printmaking and has been used for
surface embellishment for thousands of years. There are many techniques, but the
process uses a carved material that has been coated in ink to transfer its carved
image onto paper or fabric. Resulting prints can be simple or intricate – but since
the blocks are carved by hand, the printed images are often bold and distinctive.
In this workshop you will choose your materials, draw your own design, transfer
your design onto your block, carve your design into the block surface, apply
colour and proof your block by making several test prints. You will have the
opportunity to make several print blocks and print with them using a variety of
block print techniques.
Participants are encouraged to bring any block printing materials they may already
own – the instructor will provide shared cutting tools, rubber eraser blocks, print
media (inks, pigments, paints, brushes, tools) and oodles of inspiration! Please
bring 100% cotton fabric and/or a variety of papers to print on. A complete
materials list will be forwarded to confirmed workshop participants closer to the
workshop date. Kit fee of $10 payable to the instructor on workshop day.
